My greatest lessons from structuring protection plans at an international level

With a continental vision and a strong commitment to service, designing, delivering, and operating financial protection solutions across multiple countries represents the next stage in the evolution and reach of the insurance industry. On this topic, César López, a successful Latin American Top of the Table (TOT) member, shares his perspective.
One of the earliest lessons in César’s career came with his first death benefit claim. At just 18 years old, a client of his father passed away, and he was tasked with delivering a $2 million check in Venezuela. It was then that López understood the importance of structuring insurance in a strong and stable currency.
“Long-term promises must always be backed by a currency with stability and strength to truly protect families when they need it most.”
Having grown up in Miami—a highly transient city—many of his natural market eventually returned to their countries of origin. As a result, his organization developed a philosophy: regardless of where clients reside, financial solutions should not be limited by borders.
Today, their scope spans from the Rio Grande to Patagonia, covering all of Latin America and the Caribbean. While the region has historically experienced cycles of opportunity and challenge—particularly amid recent political shifts—the insurance sector continues to present significant potential. In recent years, the firm has also explored and established operations in parts of Africa, achieving early success while recognizing there is still much to build.
Different Jurisdictions
Their work is rooted in helping individuals across the world achieve their own goals. Jurisdictions and cultures are as diverse as they are complex, and each country approaches risk evaluation differently—making the work both challenging and intellectually engaging. Over time, clients often become lasting relationships, and this global exposure fosters continuous learning and a deeper understanding of varied perspectives.
Miami’s cultural diversity has served as a laboratory—allowing the team to understand a wide range of profiles across Latin America. This perspective positions them to better align solutions with each client’s origin, objectives, and destination. Collaboration across borders strengthens resilience, adaptability, and the ability to operate effectively in diverse environments.
Local Carriers or Global Structure
Throughout this journey, they have worked alongside local insurers and advisors when appropriate, recognizing that certain risks benefit from localized expertise. There is no “one-size-fits-all” methodology. Instead, internal collaboration allows them to evaluate how local products and structures impact overall strategy and risk. The guiding principle remains constant: follow the path that best serves the client.
However, they remain aligned with a core belief—long-term promises should be structured in a strong currency.
International Claims
Technology has eliminated many of the traditional barriers to filing claims, accelerating the industry’s shift toward digital processes. In many jurisdictions, insurers now accept documentation exclusively in digital form, reducing the need for physical presence.
In certain cases, teams are deployed from Miami to support clients throughout the claims process. The key to a successful experience lies in maintaining clear, consistent, and continuous communication—ensuring clients are informed and supported at every stage.
Key Learnings
Over the years, several principles have defined this international approach:
Humanity: Relationships are foundational. Meaningful connections are what sustain long-term success.
Collaboration and Preparation: No single professional holds all the answers. Specialized expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration drive stronger outcomes.
Execution: Meeting expectations consistently is essential in an uncertain world. Clear and open communication creates the foundation for trust and long-term alignment.
Breaking Limits
In an industry increasingly influenced by technology, differentiation comes from executing the fundamentals exceptionally well and building strong relationships with clients and partners. Technology remains a tool for communication—not an end in itself.
While many focus on the concept of generational wealth, it is important to recognize that without generational promises, there can be no foundation for generational wealth.
What continues to drive López is the belief that they have initiated something larger—a global mission in which advisors actively participate and contribute.
“Opportunities multiplied by ability equal success” (Sun Tzu).“The key is not always having the answer, but knowing where to find it” (A. Einstein).
