Hospitals today face an array of daunting challenges. The lingering impact of COVID-19, coupled with inflationary pressures and global financial volatility, has pushed healthcare systems to the brink. Around the world, even the most renowned hospitals are grappling with rising operational costs, an aging population, and a workforce stretched thin after years on the frontlines of a relentless pandemic.
Yet, true excellence in healthcare extends far beyond world-class treatment, groundbreaking research, and technological innovation. What sets the very best hospitals apart is their unwavering consistency. These elite institutions repeatedly attract top-tier talent, deliver outstanding patient outcomes, and pioneer new frontiers in medicine. Out of thousands of hospitals worldwide, only a rare few sustain this level of excellence year after year—earning their place in a truly distinguished global class.
To honor these exceptional institutions, Newsweek, in collaboration with global data firm Statista, proudly unveils the fifth annual edition of the World’s Best Hospitals 2023. This year’s ranking includes more than 2,300 hospitals across 28 countries, with Taiwan joining the list for the first time. For the first time as well, Newsweek has ranked the Top 250 Global Hospitals, in addition to publishing in-depth country-by-country rankings and specialty hospital leaders.

A notable advancement in this year’s methodology is the inclusion of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)—standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to assess their own functional health and quality of life. The rankings also integrate updated quality metrics, including data from Israel’s National Program for Quality Indicators (INPQ) and the Danish Clinical Quality Program. New accreditation inputs from Thailand and Taiwan further enhance the accuracy and global relevance of the scoring model. (For detailed information, please refer to the Methodology section.)
The goal of this study is clear: to provide a data-driven, comparative analysis of hospital reputation and performance around the world. It is intended as a valuable resource for patients and families seeking the highest standards of care—and as a benchmarking tool for hospitals aspiring to meet or exceed the excellence demonstrated by their global peers.
